How to Register for UAN on the UMANG App
Reading Time: 2 minutes

The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has implemented a new rule for employees generating their Universal Account Number (UAN) from August 1, 2025. The employees will be able to do it by themselves using the Aadhaar-based Face Authentication Technology (FAT) in the Unified Mobile Application for New-age Governance (UMANG) app.

Hence, Indian HRs will now have to adopt this digital route for every fresh onboarding. Until now, many employers have relied on offline or partial online processes. But with the latest directive, the UMANG App is no longer optional, as it is the only way forward. This means HR departments must quickly adapt to avoid compliance gaps and onboarding delays.

What has changed in the EPFO Policy?

EPFO has clarified that UAN generation will only be available through the UMANG App for employees, going forward. This provides a single digital platform for all PF-related services, reducing duplication and fraud. For HR managers, however, it adds an immediate operational responsibility: to ensure that every new employee’s UAN is generated digitally before payroll and PF filings. 4. Tap on the ‘Send OTP’ button.
  5. Enter the received OTP.
  6. The system will check whether your Aadhaar card is linked to a UAN, and if it is linked, you will be notified of the same.
  7. If they are not linked, you will be prompted to scan your face.
  8. Select the ‘Face Authentication’ button, and keep your face within the circle shown on the screen.
  9. Once your face is scanned successfully, the system will fetch all required details and generate the UAN for you.
  10. You will receive your new UAN via SMS on your registered mobile number.

Final Thoughts

The new EPFO mandate makes the UMANG App the central tool for employee onboarding into PF. For HR professionals, this change underscores the need for digital agility to ensure compliance without delaying payroll cycles.

By following the steps outlined above, you can streamline UAN generation and keep your organization compliant with the latest EPFO requirements.
