The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has implemented a new rule for employees generating their Universal Account Number (UAN) from August 1, 2025. The employees will be able to do it by themselves using the Aadhaar-based Face Authentication Technology (FAT) in the Unified Mobile Application for New-age Governance (UMANG) app.
Hence, Indian HRs will now have to adopt this digital route for every fresh onboarding. Until now, many employers have relied on offline or partial online processes. EPFO has clarified that UAN generation will only be available through the UMANG App for employees, going forward. This provides a single digital platform for all PF-related services, reducing duplication and fraud. For HR managers, however, it adds an immediate operational responsibility: to ensure that every new employee’s UAN is generated digitally before payroll and PF filings.
