Chief Technical Officer (CTO)

What is Chief Technical Officer (CTO)?

The ‘Chief Technical Officer’ or CTO is an individual who is responsible for a company’s technological needs as well as looking after its research and development. The CTO might also be known as ‘Chief Technology Officer’ or ‘Chief Technologist’ in some organizations.

Since a CTO’s responsibilities are very similar to a CIO, one needs to understand the distinction between the two. While the CIO looks after the IT infrastructure and other technological aspects of the company in its current form, the CTO also researches for newer technological advancements which can be implemented in future.

The CTO’s role would vary depending on the kind of organization. However, a basic ideology of a CTO’s work is to develop policies and products to enhance the efficiency of a company to make it more productive.
