White-collar Worker

What is White-collar Worker ?

‘White-collar Worker’ refers to the kind of employee who works inside a dedicated office space. The word ‘white’ refers to the white shirts that these kinds of staff used to wear in the 20th century when the phrase started gaining momentum.

White-collar workers and jobs are in contrast to the blue-collar workers and jobs which have a hands-on approach with manual labour. Although white-collar workers generally have a higher reputation compared to the blue-collared ones, it does not automatically translate to higher income.

Another kind of workers are pink-collared ones, who do care-oriented jobs such as nursing, caretakers, etc. Out of the three terms used to describe the workers, only blue-collared one is used pejoratively though.
