What is Supplemental Unemployment Benefits (SUB) ?

‘Supplemental Unemployment Benefits’ are a kind of benefits that needs to be provided in addition to the unemployment benefits for the unemployed individuals.

The supplemental unemployment benefits might either provide extra benefits or provide additional provisions of the benefits already being received. These benefits usually come into play in cases where the individual receiving it is unemployed due to training, illness or physical injuries. Hence, it can also be included in annual income plans.

There are two types of SUBs:

  • Extended Layoff Benefits, which are provided due to temporary lay-offs due to downsizing
  • Furlough Benefits, which are provided when the employees are made to work for a lesser amount of time than normal.
