What is Two-factor Theory ?

 

The ‘Two-factor Theory’ is a theory which states that the factors related to the satisfaction and dissatisfaction of any employee in the workplace are distinct and are independent of each other.

It is also referred to as the ‘Herzberg’s Motivation-Hygiene Theory’ as it was theorized by psychologist Frederick Herzberg. It is also known as the ‘Dual Factor Theory’.

The factors which help motivate the employee and improve their job satisfaction levels are known as motivators and the factors that lead to an increase in the job dissatisfaction due to their absence are referred to as hygiene factors. Rewards and recognition are a part of the motivators while factors such as salary and additional benefits come under hygiene factors.
