Gross Misconduct

What is Gross Misconduct?

‘Gross Misconduct’ refers to any major unethical behavior by an employee which would even result in them being dismissed immediately from their duties. It generally involves any action from an employee which would seriously harm the safety, health, or reputation of their colleagues or the company itself.

Generally, companies define the common forms of gross misconduct in the employee handbook or contract and also mention the repercussions should such misconduct occur from the employee. It helps the company remove any malignant individuals and helps in taking necessary actions as soon as gross misconduct occurs.

Some common examples of gross misconduct include:

  • Drug abuse or consuming alcohol during work hours

  • Committing fraud

  • Sexual assault on a colleague

  • Committing violent acts in the office

  • Vandalizing company property, etc.
