What is Data Breach?

 

A ‘Data Breach’ occurs when an unauthorized party gains access to confidential information through intentional or unintentional means. Multiple terms are used to signify this phenomenon. Some of the common ones are data leak, data spill, Information leakage, etc.

 

Intentional data breaches might occur with malicious people hacking servers to gain access to the secure data. For example, hacking the bank server to get financial information and even conduct a cyber theft.

 

On the other hand, unintentional data breaches might occur when a hard disk is scrapped without properly shredding the data inside. This might land into the hands of a data scalper who can sell the data on the dark web for a profit, thereby putting at risk the individuals whose information was on the disk.
