Is your organisation still hiring on flat structure?

Hiring on a flat structure is where companies especially MNCs have their own grading structure for salaries, job titles, appraisals and are quite rigid about maintaining the same. One must have often come across companies that grade you to help you know where you fit in the system. While this system is transparent and tries to keep chaos at bay, will this practice survive the new age of workforce that comprises of millennials?

1. Smart work vs. hard work: The discussion between smart work and hard work is an eternal one. Where today’s workforce believes in doing smart work and curb turnaround time, increase productivity and learn new tasks, they simply can’t fit in conventional rigid systems that judge everyone on similar criteria. There needs to be flexibility in the grading system since it encompasses not only fresher but also experienced ones.

2. Experience: One of the major flaws of the grading system is putting experienced candidates into one bracket. When on one hand, creativity, smart work and entrepreneurial spirit are encouraged, we are clubbing everyone in the same bracket of experienced years despite one performing better than the other.

3. Motivation: Grading systems are pre-defined and rigid giving employees little to no motivation. They view their jobs as secure paychecks that comes at the end of every month or will feel that their work isn’t being measured or judged accurately.

4. Job fulfillment: Job fulfillment is the satisfaction an employee gets from his job. He toils hard and commits to the work to earn recognition and benefits. A rigid grading system over here would block his growth since he might feel that his work is not recognized. There is no job satisfaction and when the reward is the same (e.g. offshore placement) and all his peers are pitted to claim the same, office becomes more of an arena than a workplace.

While grading system still works well for many companies, the day is not far when they will be forced to re-evaluate it.
