What is Delayering ?

‘Delayering’ refers to the removal of layers of hierarchy between the highest and lowest levels to increase the organization’s efficiency and reduce the bureaucracy involved.

It typically removes the middle managers and provides access to the employees directly. This helps in interacting with them directly and getting work done easier.

The direct benefit of delayering is the increased engagement of the workers as they will be able to make better decisions and work instead of following orders like robots. Similarly, organizational efficiency will increase as the time lost in communications and emails will be used in productivity.

The major disadvantage of delayering is that it is suitable for certain kinds of industries only and has always failed when applied to other industries. Similarly, all lower-level employees might not be very good at taking decisions individually, which might lead to disruptions in the daily working of the company.
