EMM for Workplaces: All an Entrepreneur should know

Bill Gates once famously said that, “Organisation and information technology (IT) are becoming intricately intertwined that no one can talk evocatively about one thing without mentioning the other”.

EMM aka Enterprise Mobility Management is a latest workplace phenomenon, which infers a group of people, technology or processes focused in managing mobile computing services, wireless networks and mobile devices in a business setting.

Simply put, EMM is an all-inclusive approach to securing and allowing employees to use tablets and smartphones. It aims to make employees more efficient and productive by bestowing them with the liberty to performing their tasks via mobile devices even on the go. Since a whooping number of working professionals are being hooked to tablets and smartphones these days, EMM is turning out to be increasingly significant.

What an entrepreneur should know about EMM?

EMM is often a nexus of MIM (Mobile Information Management), Mobile Application Management (MAM), Mobile Device Management (MDM) and (BYOD) Bring Your Own Device concept. MIM stresses on enabling only selected and approved applications to access business data or transmit the same, whereas MAM focuses on regulating as which users get to access which applications and MDM stresses on securing the mobile devices.

Mobile payroll is an excellent example of EMM, since it allows HR people and business managers to check and execute HR and other operations on the go.

Now for an entrepreneur, the prime goal of EMM is determining how mobile technology ought to be integrated with everyday work procedures and business objectives. Entrepreneurs also need to determine whether EMM would support the workforce when they use these devices at workplace.

It is up to the entrepreneurs to assess the solutions and pick the most apt one per their business requisites and preferences.

MDM helps the IT administrators to:

1. Set password requirements

2. Remote wipe stolen/lost mobile devices

3. Track location of the devices

All these coherently protect business data, but do not address data security threats. For a business with only MDM in place, it is quite difficult to prevent an employee from accessing and uploading the data to some unsecure database.

Mobile information management (MIM) and mobile application management (MAM) are two aspects of EMM that offer more control over your critical business data. Here, IT administrators get to enforce policies and protocols on specific business data and apps. For instance, it enables secure file synchronisation and sharing.

Security undoubtedly is one of the quintessential parts of any technology implementation. Since mobile devices are prone to be misplaced and stolen easily, they are highly vulnerable. EMM is a nexus of systems aimed to protect unauthorised access to business data on mobile devices.

Mobile devices in organisations with BYOD policies are used for both professional as well as personal use. Here, the business has less control over the mobile devices that could put corporate data at risk. Thus, data on mobile devices ought to be restricted and centralized with stringent security protocols in place.
